The City of Olympia asked KMB to design an end-destination canopy structure to clearly identify the location of the City’s artesian well site.  Long celebrated in the community, the well had lived in near obscurity within an old parking lot, sandwiched between existing commercial buildings in the downtown area.  The purpose of the canopy was to give the existing site a civic prominence and solid identity.  KMB incorporated several indigenous materials including permeable brick pavers, concrete, cedar timbers, wood framing, and wood decking into the canopy design.  Many of the materials are intended to be recycled or salvaged from other projects under the City’s aggressive capital improvement program.
