KMB in Association with KMD developed the program requirements, conceptual design, Construction Documents and Administration for this 83,000 SF Facility. The Facility is designed with 3 integrated but separate area: detention, administration, and courts. The detention area houses 80 juveniles in four housing pods and includes single sleeping room units located around separate dayroom areas. Other elements include intake, visitation, food service, and medical. The administration area provides over 17,000 square feet of new county offices, including a public lobby and space for court clerks and probation. The court area is located on the second floor and provides space for four courtrooms (two family courts and two juvenile courts) and associated support areas.
This is the first integrated Family Court and Juvenile Facility built in the State of Washington. It is an excellent example of a trend toward centralization of juvenile justice activities and family court services. The design team successfully achieved a good balance of a public building that is open, airy, and inviting; with diverse functions that are close to one another yet secure.
